On-Site Museum Programs

History

American Heritage Tour

A trained docent will provide your students with the opportunity to go back in time and discover how people lived 200 years ago.  Our animated President and Mrs. McKinley figures will greet them in the McKinley Gallery.  They will also explore our historical life-size town where they can slide down a fire pole and see our operating model train layout.

Ohio & You

Ohio & You takes place in the 7th street schoolhouse in the Street of Shop. Historic on the outside the inside of the classroom is thoroughly modern to meet today's academic challenges. Four programs have been developed in answer to the Ohio Proficiency Exams to help children think critically, solve problems and work together:

McKinley & Me - K & 1st Grade
This program teaches children to use simple time lines using important events in the President McKinley's life. They will learn the story of the red carnation and make a red carnation to take home.

A Visit with the McKinleys - 2nd Grade
Students in this program will investigate objects associated with the McKinleys and develop questions about the material. Students will then go to the McKinley Gallery and get the answers from our animated figures of President and Mrs. McKinley.

Stark County - Then & Now - 3rd Grade
Students will learn about the history of Stark County, including the development of major industries and immigration to the area. Using maps, students will locate the countries of origin of Stark County immigrants and where they settled.

Beautiful Ohio - 4th Grade
Students will learn about the Ohio symbols and the different presidents associated with Ohio. They will use map skills to locate the birth and death places of each Ohio president. In small groups, students will make a presentation about one of the eight presidents from Ohio.

  

Science

Discover World

A docent will introduce students to the science contained on the three islands of Discover World and then allow students to explore each island on their own. On the Natural History Island they will learn about dinosaurs, ice age animals and people, and explore in the rock and mineral area. Students will meet the animals living on Ecology Island--ferrets, bats, snakes, opossum and skinks--learn about their habitats and food chains and pet some of them. Space Station Earth is filled with hands on physical science exhibits for students to explore.

Science demonstrations are available from September through March. These include an Electric Show, Bubbles, Under Pressure and Sinkers & Floaters.  Please Choose One.

 

Science Expeditions-NEW!!!!

Science Expeditions takes place in our school house in the Street of Shops and is comprised of four grade appropriate programs: Habitats, Animal Adaptations, Changes and Dinosaurs.  Each program was designed around the Ohio Content Standards.  Students will be challenged to think critically, problem solve and work together to achieve common goals. 

Habitats -(1st & 2nd Grade)
Students will learn the living and non-living components of a habitat. Students will participate in activities that show the effect of a changing habitat on populations. They will learn the importance of food, water, shelter and space to all living creatures.

Animal Adaptations - (3rd-5th Grades)
The class will participate in various activities that connect structure to function in plants and animals. Students will work in small groups to classify plants and animals.

Changes - (4th & 6th Grade)
Students will view and participate in experiments involving chemical or physical changes. They will
work together to perform a variety of controlled experiments. Students will learn characteristics of chemical and physical changes.

Dinosaurs-(All Grades)
Students will examine sizes of various dinosaurs. In small groups, students will also investigate how dinosaurs behave. Students will also learn the characteristics of a dinosaur.

Hoover-Price Planetarium

Students will gain a better understanding of all the planets, constellations, major stars and deep sky objects when they attend a program designed for their age level. Current sky events as well as standard terminology used by astronomers will also be discussed. We are willing to tailor programs to your class needs -- call the museum to speak to the planetarium director. (330-455-7043)

Camp-In: Overnight in Discover World

A program for the adventurous; Camp-In is an overnight experience for school groups, clubs and scouts. Campers arrive Friday evening at 6:30 PM for a pizza supper. An evening of science fun and education is on tap as children work their way through three major science islands in discover world. A specialized science class in the theme of your choice is scheduled during the evening. Children and chaperones spend the night sleeping among the Discover world exhibits.

A continental breakfast at 7:30 AM and a final look around complete the Camp-In experience. The museum sells special patches for Camp-In participants only for $1 in the Museum Shoppe.

Camp-Ins can be scheduled from September through April. A minimum of 25 students must sign-up at $25 per student; $15 per adult.

Off-Site Outreach Programs       

History-to-Go

Trained professionals staff this program. Presentations are designed to help reinforce the learning needed for successful performance on the state proficiency exams. History-to-Go programs can be scheduled from September to March.

3rd Grade History-to-Go
Students will learn about the history of Stark County, including the development of major industries and immigration to the area. Using maps and historic photographs, students will discover the rich history of Stark County. The program is 45 minutes in length and limited to schools in Stark County. The fee is $30 per program.

4th Grade History-to-Go
Students will learn about the Ohio symbols and the different Presidents associated with Ohio. They will use map skills to locate the birth and death places of each Ohio President. In small groups, students will make a presentation about one of the eight Ohio Presidents. The fee for this 1 hour program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County.

The McKinley Monument: A Tribute to a Fallen President
All Grades. This in-class program highlights the life and tragic death of President McKinley and the subsequent construction of the McKinley Monument. Students will follow the construction process through slides and video from the Museum's archives. The fee for this 45 minute program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County.

Science-to-Go

Habitats - First and Second Grade

States of Matter - Fourth Grade
Students will use their observation skills in small groups to identify mystery containers. They will view gas changing volume right before their eyes. Students will identify the properties of different states of matter. The fee for this program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County.

Changes - Fourth and Sixth Grade
Students will view and participate in experiments involving chemical or physical changes. They will work together to perform a variety of controlled experiments. Students will learn characteristics of chemical and physical changes. The fee for this program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County.

BUGS!--Elemantary Grades                                                                                                                                          

This program will teach kids what an insect is and the differences and similarities between other arthropods.  Students will have the opportunity to meet several arthropod ambassadors from the museum.  The fee for this program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County

Unbelievable Behaviors--Middle and High School                                                                                                          

This program gives older students the opportunity to identify and examine bug behaviors and adaptations. The fee for this program is $30 per program and is limited to schools in Stark County.

Treasure Trunks                                               

Trunks for supplemental enrichment in your classroom are available from the museum. Trunks include representative artifacts or samples, activities and instructions for use. The trunks have been designed for certain grade levels, however all of our trunks can be adapted to any grade level. 

The trunk may be checked out for one or two weeks. There is a $10 fee, $5 of which is refunded upon return of the trunk. Trunks are usually checked out on Saturday afternoon and returned the following Saturday morning. Please email us or call 330-455-7043 for more information. Available subjects include:
